Being bugged? Your guide to pests

It’s an annoying fact that long, hot Australian summers bring plagues of bugs along with the ice-creams, picnics and outdoor pursuits we love. The longer the spell of hot weather, the more entrenched these infestations can become. Learn about the different types of pests and how to keep them at bay!

Dark, warm and moist places are beloved by the German, American and Oriental cockroaches generally found in Australia and the warmer and damper it is, the easier it becomes for cockroaches to breed. In fact cockroaches are high-risk pests with the potential to carry a range of diseases, as well as increasing the risk of childhood asthma.

These pesky creatures cause a range of human health problems including rashes, allergies and anaphylaxis. In other words they are also implicated in the increasingly diagnosed Lyme’s Disease, according to the Lyme Disease Association of Australia.

Although bush ticks are troublesome for dogs, a bite from a paralysis tick is usually fatal, as many dog owners have discovered. Ticks can be hard to spot on our furry friends – check behind ears and in-between toes and all over their bodies. The best way to protect your dog is to make sure they are on a tick preventative and are checked daily.

Fleas thrive in the hot, humid Australian climate, so it’s a must to keep your pet’s flea control treatment up to date. Flea bites are painful for your dog or cat, and just as painful for humans.

These unpleasant pests breed rapidly in hot, wet conditions and are a staple of Australian summers. Some mosquitoes carry potentially fatal diseases like Ross River Virus.

Lawn Grubs

Lawn grubs, often called white grubs, are the immature form of different scarab beetles. These white, C-shaped creatures have soft bodies with legs near the head. They feed on grass roots , causing sections of grass in the lawn to die. Grubs eventually turn into adult beetles and emerge from soil to mate and lay eggs, which hatch into more grubs.
